Villaverde

Villaverde is a town in the municipality of La Oliva, in the north of Fuerteventura, one of the seven islands of the Canary Islands (Spain). Its population was 1685 inhabitants in 2013.

It is a small farming village about 4km northeast of La Oliva, the municipal capital, on the FV-101 road to Corralejo.

With regard to its toponymy, the village is relatively green in comparison with other villages on the island. This is due to the presence of pozzolana, a porous volcanic ash from the surrounding volcanoes (La Arena and Escanfraga).

Regarding the San Vicente Ferrer Chapel, it was built during the 18th century, although there are no exact references to its construction. In the pastoral visit made by the bishop of the Diocese of the Canary Islands, Antonio Tavira Almazán, in 1792, no mention is made of this hermitage.

In the 18th century, it was the general custom of the people of Majorca to make a testamentary memory of the distribution of their poor assets. Most of them were invested in paying for burial expenses and masses, and there was never a lack of masses for the soul or for the end of the year, and the masses of San Vicente Ferrer were very frequent. In the Fuerteventura songbook, reference is made to some humorous songs about villages and their inhabitants. In it, we find two couplets that the inhabitants of Lajares and Villaverde sang against each other.
