Our local path coincides with the route taken by the devotees of the Virgen del Tanquito who celebrate their pilgrimage on the first Saturday in June, carrying the image of the Virgin from the hermitage of Cardón to EI Tanquito. This pilgrimage has been held since the beginning of the 20th century, when the figure of the Virgin was discovered in a gallery in the rock. We will start our walk in the village of Cardón, from where we will set off between the gullies and greenhouses towards the Barranco de los Tanques ravine. We will then ascend between the Mojón and the Cuesta Vieja surrounded by sparse vegetation composed mainly of gorse (Launaea arborescens). We continue towards EI Pedregullo until we come to a circle surrounded by stones where the faithful rest during their pilgrimage to El Tanquito. At this point, the landscape delights us with a subtle contrast between the rounded hills to the north and the steep relief of the Jandía ridge to the south. We leave the Majada del Huertito on our right, walking among the tabaibas (Euphorbia spp.) and verodes (Kleinia nerutolia) and we will observe the magnitude of the Cofete arch from its beginning, at the Isthmus of La Pared, to its end at Punta Pesebre. If we go a little further we will find a gate that we will have to close behind us. This indicates that a few metres further on we will reach the end of this small route, El Tanquito, a sacred place where the faithful come to ask for favours and make promises to the Virgin.
