All the hidden secrets in Tindaya
Fuerteventura has its sacred place. A place full of magic and mystery. The magic of knowing that it was inhabited by the "majos", the ancient inhabitants of the island, and the mystery of not knowing exactly what the foot-shaped engravings that have been found mean. We are referring to the mountain of Tindaya, a must-see if you are in Fuerteventura.
Located in the northwest, in the municipality of La Oliva, Tindaya is a protected natural area at an altitude of 400 metres, which stands out in the flat landscape of the island. On the southwest ridge of Tindaya there is a path that allows visitors to get to know it up close and appreciate the beauty of its colours, which at sunset turn an incredible reddish and orange tone. The entire landscape surrounding this sacred mountain is imbued with an enigmatic atmosphere.
The sacred mountain of Tindaya is of special historical and archaeological interest due to the large number of rock engravings it contains. Tindaya was a sacred place for the people who inhabited the island before the conquest of the Castilians, the majos, who carved more than 300 podomorphic (foot-shaped) engravings on it. But what was the significance of these engravings, and why are they concentrated on a particular part of the mountain? Most of the podomorphs look towards Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the nearest islands with the highest relief. On clear days, the silhouette of Mount Teide can be seen from the summit of Tindaya. Podomorph engravings have also been found in Lanzarote facing the mountain of Tindaya, which would confirm that the religious and cultural importance of Tindaya in aboriginal times went beyond the limits of Fuerteventura.
It is believed that the podomorphs have a direct relationship with the stars. Tindaya could have been a great astronomical clock to determine the solstices and lunar phases. In addition, it would have been a sacred place where magical rituals were performed.
And if we get tired of enjoying relaxing days at the beach - which is highly unlikely, Fuerteventuraone of the Biosphere Reserves of the Canary Islands, also offers other unforgettable plans.
