PR® FV1 Gully of the Cañada de Melián - Esquinzo

The PR-FV 1 starts at Montaña de la Mareta and heads south along the sandy ravine of Cañada de Melián, during which we can enjoy an unusual landscape in which silence and solitude will be our only companions for the first few kilometres. We will continue our journey to Majada de las Pilas, a semi-desert plain that is home to one of the most interesting bird communities on the island, the steppe birds. Among them, the endemic Canarian houbara bustard (Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae), the animal symbol of Fuerteventura. We then climb northwestwards between the Montaña del Fraile and a rest area, where we can take a break to enjoy this uninhabited spot. A few metres further on we reach the Montaña de los Corrales, and we will see the small village of El Roque to the right and the coastal village of El Cotillo to the front. Once we leave the houses of Montaña de Fraile behind us, we enter the Tablero Alto de la Molina, where an 18th century fortress stands. From here the road enters a dirt track, often used by cars, which we follow until the signs direct us to the edge of the coast. The large yellow sandy beaches that appear before us bear witness to the immensity of the ocean that surrounds us, which takes on different shades of blue-green, tempting us to enter it. We continue parallel to this impressive coastline of cliffs towards the end of our route, Esquinzo Beach, where we can enjoy a satisfying swim. It is common to see the coastal goats, which are in a semi-wild state and are gathered from time to time in the traditional "apañadas".
