The Isla de Lobos has an area of 6 square kilometres framed by almost 14 kilometres of coastline formed by steep cliffs that can be seen from Corralejo, as it is only 2 kilometres from Fuerteventura and 8 kilometres from Lanzarote.
A bit of history
It is believed that the island was inhabited from Roman times and, later, after the occupation of the Canary Islands, it was used for hunting sea lions and as a refuge for pirates.
In 1860, the construction of the Punta Martiño lighthouse began, so the construction workers settled in the north of the island using small buildings.
In the past, the island was massively inhabited by sea lions. There were so many of them that they gave the island its name. Each sea lion needs about 40 kilos of fish per day, so the fishermen, alerted by the dwindling marine resources in the area, eliminated most of the sea lions.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, the island would pass through the hands of different owners who would carry out some urban development projects that would not finally be carried out due to the fact that the island was declared a natural park.

El Puertito
One of those places to fall in love with and the most photographed spot on the island, it is formed by extensive arms of volcanic rock on which the crystalline waters of the Atlantic dance to form calm turquoise lagoons. In El Puertito you can see the old fishermen's houses, which are practically the only buildings to be found on the island.
Lime kiln and old salt works
The remains of the ovens that were used to make the lime needed to line the houses that were built still remain, while the old salt pans were used to extract the salt that would be used to preserve the fish.
